Principal Investigator
Haotian Liu
Principal Investigator · Group Leader
I’m Haotian Liu, an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Oklahoma State University and Associate Director of the Center for Integrated Building Systems (CIBS).
My research focuses on heat pumps, refrigeration, and thermal energy systems. My group combines physics-based modeling, experiments, and AI to understand system behavior and improve efficiency, reliability, and affordability.
Through CIBS, I work with industry partners to turn practical engineering challenges into research questions - and research findings into useful tools and design guidance. I’m also committed to helping students build the technical skills and judgment to solve these problems.
Postdoctoral Researchers
Cosmin Mihai Udroiu
Postdoctoral Researcher
Cosmin Mihai Udroiu is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Mechanical Engineering at Oklahoma State University. His research focuses on advanced thermal systems, refrigeration, heat transfer, and the development of more efficient and environmentally sustainable heating and cooling technologies.
He earned his Ph.D. from Universitat Jaume I in Spain, where his research focused on ultra-low-temperature refrigeration systems capable of reaching temperatures as low as −80 °C. This work originated from his undergraduate thesis, which was recognized as the second-best undergraduate thesis in Spain, and later developed into his doctoral research. The project addressed the limitations of conventional ultra-low-temperature systems and investigated the replacement of high-global-warming-potential refrigerants, such as R23, with lower-impact alternatives. He also investigated high-temperature vapor-compression systems capable of reaching temperatures of approximately 250 °C while mitigating refrigerant degradation.
His current research at Oklahoma State University includes the optimization of vapor-compression systems and heat exchangers for low-GWP refrigerants, as well as experimental research on flow boiling, advanced imaging techniques, and two-phase heat-transfer phenomena.

Advisor: Prof. Haotian Liu
Yash Trivedi is a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering at Oklahoma State University after previously completing his BSME at Purdue University. His research focuses on two-phase heat transfer and flow boiling for high-heat-flux electronics cooling, with an emphasis on using computer vision and machine learning to characterize boiling behavior and predict critical heat flux. In his free time, Yash Trivedi enjoys playing soccer and golf, as well as cycling.
Muhammad Shummas Humayun
PhD Student
Advisor: Prof. Haotian Liu
Muhammad Shummas Humayun is a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering at Oklahoma State University (OSU). He completed his master’s degree in Thermal Energy Engineering from NUST, Pakistan. His research focuses on developing a flexible heat pump testing platform with refrigerant injection to characterize system and component performance under controlled operating conditions. In his free time, he usually enjoys playing the guitar and listening to music.
Tajwar Haque
PhD Student
Project co-PI: Prof. Haotian Liu
Tajwar Haque is a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering at Oklahoma State University, where he completed his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in Fall 2025. His previous research focused on advanced ground heat exchanger design and modeling, including the development of GLHEPro. Building on his experience in heat exchanger and HVAC system modeling, his current research explores the constrained redesign and multi-objective optimization of heat exchangers and unitary HVAC systems for next-generation refrigerants. In his free time, Tajwar Haque enjoys gravel biking, playing soccer, and going to the gym.
Rasheed Shittu
PhD Student
Project co-PI: Prof. Haotian Liu
Rasheed Shittu is a Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering at Oklahoma State University. He holds a B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Ilorin and an M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Technology Akure, Nigeria. His research interests include heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R), thermal system modeling and simulation, advanced controls, and energy-efficient heat pumps using refrigerants with low global warming potential. His current work focuses on developing advanced control strategies to improve the energy efficiency and reliability of HVAC&R systems. In his free time, Rasheed Shittu enjoys reading the news and playing soccer.
